Fish Lane Urban Refurbishment

Ellen van Neerven

In the development of the Fish Lane urban refurbishment ARIA approached Blaklash to contribute to a timeline that reflected the history of Fish Lane. The timeline was to capture site specific history of the area and the broader South Brisbane catchment; offering a moment to pause and reflect on the significance of the site and celebrate its evolution over time.

Fish Lane Urban Refurbishment

Blaklash identified this as an opportunity for artist engagement and proposed Mununjali writer/artist Ellen van Neerven to respond through written word. The outcome sees Indigenous and non-Indigenous history interwoven with poetry, realised in a inlayed text ground treatment. Ellen’s poetry tells stories about the history of the land, connection to the river, and the survival and revival of First Australian narratives.
